Short answer: Yes. A Kolkata-made vegan leather bag priced at €49.90 on Amazon.de leaves about €11 profit per bag (22%) after VAT, Amazon fees, import duty and ads. Setup costs about €2,500–3,500 before stock. The two risks to plan for are German return rates and the new greenwashing rules. Figures as of October 2026.
To show the numbers we use a made-up brand, Saanjh Studio (not a real company): a Kolkata label selling vegan leather crossbody bags and totes at ₹1,899–2,499 on Amazon.in.
Do German shoppers actually buy vegan bags?
Yes, but mostly not because they are vegan. Only about 1% of German adults eat vegan (Max Rubner-Institut survey). Most faux leather bags are bought for design and price: on one large German bag retailer, about 70% of PU bags cost under €75. Lead with design and quality, and use "vegan" as a supporting reason to buy.
What price should an Indian vegan bag brand charge in Germany?
| Band | Typical price | Who is there |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | €30–80 | Mass-market PU bags, high-street and Amazon brands |
| Mid | €80–200 | Design-led vegan brands using apple, corn or recycled materials |
| Premium | €200–500+ | Bio-based "next-gen" materials, designer labels |
A new Indian brand with no German reviews belongs at the top of the entry band, around €44.90–54.90. That's high enough to look like a proper brand next to cheap no-name bags, and low enough that a German shopper will take a chance on a name they've never seen.
Plant-based materials, such as the coconut-based leathers being developed in Kerala, can support €80–120 later, once the brand has reviews.
How much profit is there in one vegan leather bag?
About €11 on a €49.90 crossbody bag sold through Amazon FBA (factory cost ₹650, €1 = ₹106.57):
| Item | Per bag |
|---|---|
| Customer pays | €49.90 |
| German VAT (19%, included in the price) | −€7.97 |
| Factory cost (₹650) | −€6.10 |
| Dust bag, German label, QC | −€0.60 |
| Sea freight India → Germany | −€1.40 |
| EU import duty (9.7%) | −€0.79 |
| Amazon referral fee (~15%) | −€7.48 |
| FBA fulfilment + storage | −€3.65 |
| Returns allowance (8%) | −€3.35 |
| Advertising (15% of price) | −€7.48 |
| Profit per bag | €11.07 (22%) |
At €39.90 profit drops to about €6.30; at €59.90 it rises to about €15.80. Bags work well because they ship as normal cargo, the FBA fee (about €3.40) is under 7% of the price, and they don't break or expire. Budget at least 8% for returns: Germans send back a lot of the fashion they buy online.
What is the EU import duty on vegan leather bags from India?
9.7% for bags with an outer surface of plastic sheeting (most PU bags), 3.7% for a textile outer and 3% for real leather. India can get reduced rates under the EU's GSP scheme with proof of origin. The India–EU trade agreement (talks closed January 2026, signature expected around the end of 2026) should cut many of these duties to zero once it is in force.
What registrations does a bag brand need to sell in Germany?
Fewer than cosmetics: no safety assessor, no pre-market approval.
- EU Responsible Person (GPSR): an EU-based company named on the product or packaging. Amazon checks it.
- REACH lab test per material for phthalates, PAHs, azo dyes and DMFu.
- German VAT registration before stock arrives in Amazon's warehouse.
- EORI number from German customs (free).
- LUCID packaging registration plus a packaging licence.
- EU trademark for Amazon Brand Registry (recommended).
Can you call a vegan bag "eco-friendly" in Germany?
Not without proof. From 27 September 2026, Germany bans vague claims like "eco-friendly", "green" or "climate-friendly" unless backed by a recognised top-level certification.
- Name the actual material: "PU-coated fabric, recycled polyester lining".
- Check before you say "plastic-free": many plant-based leathers still use a PU binder.
- PETA-Approved Vegan (from ₹3,500 a year for Indian companies) proves no animal materials. It is not an environmental claim.
- On German listings, "Kunstleder" or "veganes Lederimitat" plus the material is safer than "Leder".
How much does it cost to launch?
| Item | Estimate |
|---|---|
| EU Responsible Person (GPSR) | €200–400 per year |
| REACH lab tests | €150–400 per material |
| German VAT registration | ~€300 one-time + monthly filing |
| EU trademark (recommended) | from €850 |
| German listings, photos, A+ content | €600–900 |
| Barcodes, packaging licence, first clearance | €400–700 |
| Setup before stock | about €2,500–3,500 |
| First stock: 300 bags at ~€8.90 landed | about €2,700 |
Running costs are about €175 a month (Amazon plan, VAT filing, packaging licence), so Saanjh covers them at around 16 bags a month.
Our verdict
Germany is a realistic first EU market for a design-led Indian vegan bag brand:
- Launch 3–5 of your best designs at €44.90–54.90.
- Sea freight about 300 bags into Amazon FBA.
- Invest in German photos and copy before more ads.
- Describe the material honestly.
FAQ
Do I need an EU Responsible Person to sell bags in Germany? Yes. Since December 2024, the EU's General Product Safety Regulation requires an EU-based economic operator for products from non-EU manufacturers, and Amazon checks for it.
Do vegan leather bags need CE marking? No. CE marking applies to specific product groups such as toys and electronics, not handbags.
Can vegan bags be shipped from India by sea? Yes. Bags are not dangerous goods, so normal LCL sea freight works and costs far less than air.
Can I use the term "vegan leather" on Amazon.de? It is widely used, but describe the actual material and avoid environmental claims you cannot prove.
